October 15th, POLYRHYTHMS Third Sunday Jazz Workshop & Matinee Series welcomes vibraphonist Nicki Malley and her Quintet featuring trumpeter Edgar Crockett to the Redstone Room. A Jazz Demystifying Workshop begins at 3 pm, followed by a matinee concert from 6–8.
The theme of Nikki Malley’s performance is “The Many Voices of Vibes,” drawing from the repertoire of famous vibraphonist and also songs that have inspired her throughout the years. Rounding out the onstage quintet are Edgar Crockett – trumpet, Derel Monteith – piano, Andy Crawford – bass, and Jason Brannon on drums.
As Director of Jazz Studies and Chair of the Department of Music at Knox College, Malley directs the Knox Jazz Ensemble and teaches courses in Jazz History, Music of the African Diaspora, Music and Social Movements, and 20th-Century Music. Malley is Artistic Director of the Knox Jazz Year, including the Jerome Mirza Jazz Residency, the Knox Winter Jazz Series, and The Knox-Rootabaga Jazz Festival.
In recent years, she has appeared as a featured soloist with Nova Singers, The Bradley University Scholarship Series, The Knox-Galesburg Symphony, The Knox College Choir, and The Galesburg Community Chorus.
Nikki received her B.A. in Music from Knox College, her M.A. in Musicology from Washington University in St. Louis, and her Ph.D. in Musicology from the University of Iowa. Nikki’s current research examines the improvisatory aspects of auctioneering, and she is a 2010 graduate of the World Wide College of Auctioneering. She maintains an active research agenda, having been recently published in The Journal of the Society for American Music, and appearing as a speaker at national and international conferences on music and culture.
Dr. Edgar Crockett, currently a professor of music at Black Hawk College in Moline, Illinois, is a musician, composer and educator. As a commercial trumpet player he has performed with Ray Charles, Roberta Flack, James Ingram, Maureen McGovern, The Temptations, The Four Tops and many others. As a jazz trumpeter and director, he has performed with Jimmy Heath, Willie Pickens, David Sanchez, Vincent Herring, Tom Harrell, J.J. Johnson, Louie Bellson, Clark Terry, Danillo Perez, Stefon Harris, Javon Jackson, John Clayton, Diego Urcola, Mark Levine, and many other jazz greats.
Polyrhythms Third Sunday Jazz Workshop & Matinee Series at the RME’s Redstone Room, October 15th, features an all-ages workshop at 3 pm, and a matinee performance from 6-8 pm.
