To help business owners and residents prepare for the potential impact of 2020 flooding, the City of Davenport and Scott County Emergency Management are hosting an event Saturday, Feb. 29, for Iowa and Illinois property owners throughout the region. Businesses owners also may follow these recommendations to reduce the likelihood of flood damage to their building:

  • Know your flood zone
  • Learn the base flood elevation (BFE) for your property
  • Employ dry floodproofing techniques
  • Purchase or renew a flood insruance policy under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)
  • Landscape with native plants
  • Raise electrical components
  • Raise or floodproof HVAC
  • Move valuables to higher levels
  • Keep important documents in a waterproof container
  • Declutter drains and gutters
  • Use flood-resistant materials
  • Provide backup power
  • Know the location of disconnect valves and cut-off points (gas, water, electricity)
  • Seal cracks
  • Apply waterproof coating
  • Check downspouts
  • Check slope of property
  • Anchor fuel tanks
  • Install sewer backflow valve
  • Use a sump pump with backup power
  • Inspect wells
